SUDDENLY IT'S THERE:
THE PARAGLIDE
At the beginning of the 1970s Dieter Strasilla and Andrea Kuhn experimented with round canopy
and square canopy sails. For a long time nothing much happened with this new kind of flight gear.
„In 1985 expert prognoses were still pretty bad", says paragliding pioneer Dieter Strasilla. The
price/performance ratio was much too unfavorable compared to the Delta. One year later, the boom
already set in. Especially people in France were excited about the simple design of the system and a
first school in Mieussy quickly became popular. Later on, the boom reached Switzerland.

Au debut des annees soixante-dix, Dieter Strasilla et Andrea Kuhn firent
des essais avec des calottes rondes et des voiles a surface platte. Pendant
longtemps pas grand chose se passa avec ces nouveaux appareils."Encore
en 1985"nous dit
dit le pionnier du parapente,Dieter Strasilla, "les pronostics des
specialistes concernant ce sport etaient assez pessimistes."
Le rapport performance/prix de ces engins par rapport a une aile delta
etait trop desavantageux. Une anne é plus tard, le boom etait declenche.
C´est avant tout en France que la simplicite du systeme suscita
beaucoup d´enthousiasme ; la premiere ecole a Mieussy ne manqua
pas de succes. Plus tard, le boom atteignit aussi la Suisse.
On les appelait "voiles de parachute": Pendant les annees soixante-dix
Dieter Strasilla remontait deja par petits sauts sur un versant au sommet
du Titlis avec une calotte ronde.
